Description of the project
The so-called Direct Reduction process reduces iron ore pellets at solid state with a hot reducing gas in a counter-current moving bed reactor (DR shaft). This gas (syngas) is a mixture of two reducing agents, H2 and CO, usually produced from steam reforming of natural gas. Direct reduction is mainly operated by MIDREX® or HYL® processes. Making steel via direct reduction decreases the CO2 emissions of the process, compared with the standard route.
Such processes have already been studied and modelled several times by the scientific community, but most studies mainly focus on detailed mathematical models of the physics and the chemistry of the reducing process into the DR shaft and do not handle the behaviour of the whole plant. Other approaches consider the whole plant but do not offer precise description of the DR shaft itself.
The goal of the present study is to investigate the plant in its entirety through a flowsheeting approach using Aspen Plus combined with a detailed modelling of the DR shaft. In particular, introduction of accurate kinetics of reactions and of partial discretisation of the shaft into Aspen Plus will be considered.
Applicant with a PhD in chemical or metallurgical engineering. Knowledge of direct reduction process can be acquired during the job. Process modelling and flowsheeting skills are mandatory. Advanced knowledge in Aspen Plus would be a plus. Fluency in French or English is required.
A 1-year contract with the University, around 2500 € gross per month.
